Website Refactoring: Articles and Notes

I've made a significant change which will hopefully make it easier for me to update this site more often. I've re-implemented traditional blog categories and grouped most existing posts into long-form "articles" and short-form "notes". This gives me a category where I can publish short pieces like photos, recommendations, links to albums, links to videos, and so on without feeling like I need to write a thousand words or whatever. (That's a pretty low bar for "long-form" writing, I know, but writing scares me.)

This matters because there are new browsing and RSS feed options available. Articles (RSS) and notes (RSS) both have their own chronological pages and feeds. The main page and main RSS feed will continue to display all posts as normal. If you're currently subscribed to the main RSS feed of this blog and still want to receive all posts then you don't have to change anything. There's also a unique (and hopefully podcatcher compatible) RSS feed of just the Movement Through Thought mixes. These different feeds and views are available so you can choose how much of my nonsense you want to read.

Think of the short-form "notes" as something like a microblog in the style of tumblr, a place where I can link videos and do other lazy posts.

2017 and 2018 Demoscene Mixes Available Again

Hey all, just a quick note to say that I've re-uploaded the 2017 and 2018 demoscene / tracker music mixes I performed for MTT on aNONradio. As of this post five such mixes are now available for download on this website:

  1. MTT 043 / Demosong 2017/12/22
  2. MTT 095 / Beyond Reality 2018/12/21
  3. MTT 147 / Pattern Repeat 2019/12/23
  4. MTT 148 / Backwards & Forwards 2019/12/27
  5. MTT 200 / New Note Action 2020/12/24

These particular mixes are important to me so I'll keep them up as long as I can. Please forgive the many mixing mistakes in them and enjoy.

Mix Availability & Downloads On This Website

A couple of things have prompted me to re-evaluate how I distribute recorded mixes on this website.

First, I stopped broadcasting on aNONradio a few weeks ago. Since I'm no longer a contributing member there, I believe it's unfair for me to link to files in aNONradio's archives. (And those files could disappear at any time - whenever the admins decide they need the disk space, basically). I'm going to have to host my own files from now on.

Second, 189 mixes (200 soon) is too many to keep available all at once, in my opinion. Right now it's 15 gigs of mp3 data. That's not an amount of data I can afford to serve, given my current hosting and money situation.

So here's my plan: each new episode of Movement Through Thought will be available as a downloadable file hosted on this website for one year. I'll remove old files as I add new ones. The tracklist blog posts will remain up. Old mixes that I think are significant I'll keep available as downloads indefinitely, no more than a couple for each broadcast year. I'll tag posts with audio download to hopefully make them easier to find. Recordings uploaded to mixcloud will remain there for as long as mixcloud keeps them.

I do still have all these files, so if there's a specific mix you want that isn't available on this website send me an e-mail and I'll try to get it to you.

That's where I'm at. This seems like a reasonable system to me, a good middle ground. I hope it works out.

Necrotech, Nanoshock

Necrotech, Nanoshock books

Necrotech by K.C. Alexander. Angry Robot Books, 2016.
Nanoshock by K.C. Alexander. Angry Robot Books, 2017.

Filthy, angry, and a lot of fun. "Profane & Proud" is written on the back of Nanoshock, and they mean it. Reads like a great Cyberpunk 2020 campaign. That's maybe unfair - there's a lot more going on in these books than in your average game of CP2020 - but it's the comparison that immediately comes to mind.

I'm a fan.

Posting because I've just started Nanoshock.

Tron (1982)

The TV announcer voice says: And now: Tron. Starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner.

Taped off TV - Fox 49 KPDX - some time in 1995. (There's an advertisement for the Jerky Boys movie during one of the commercial breaks, which conveniently dates the broadcast). The screenshots you see here are of an x264 (CRF 23) digital recording of an EP Mode VHS tape. I wonder how many generations down the line this is.

This is how I've always watched Tron. Low-res, 4:3 pan & scan, edited, with commercials.

Odin Photon Space Sailer Starlight

Odin: Photon Space Sailer Starlight, 1985. Taped off the Sci-Fi channel some time in the '90s. Subsequently copied and recopied; screenshots below are from a digital recording of a beat up EP mode VHS tape.

An infamously bad movie with some beautiful visuals. Remembered as a boring rehash of ideas and imagery better presented in Space Battleship Yamato. Features a couple of songs ("Gotta Fight", "Odin") by Loudness.

See the Anime World Order podcast for a great discussion of this movie (and how terrible it is).

What's Your Pleasure?

Screengrab from the end of Hellraiser

Hellraiser, 1987, VHS. Second generation, dubbed onto a "Hollywood Video" branded tape. Subtitles from opensubtitles. The VCR used for playback during the dubbing process left a little gift you can see below. Fortunately it only happens once during the movie.

About & Contact

introduction

Hi, I'm Cameron.
I collect electronic music, read books, use Linux and BSD, and play Quake.

I've been a DJ for about 20 years, playing mostly breaks and electro. A long time ago I used to write bad music with Modplug Tracker and later Jeskola Buzz.

"CEV" is my initials. I've never liked "DJ CEV" as a handle but I used it for over a decade and never came up with anything better so it's stuck now.

Accounts, addresses, where to find me

Here's a list of my various accounts and contact points:

The fastest way to reach me is by e-mail or IRC. All other services are checked much less frequently.

Past and current shows, gigs, music things

From around 2010 or 2011 through February 2020 I played music at Ground Kontrol with my friend DJ Megaphysics. We played there every last Wednesday until the pandemic hit in 2020. Vinyl at first, then later digital. You can find old tracklists from our shows by browsing the Logical Aggression tag on this website.

Movement Through Thought on Anonradio, the SDF's radio station, from 2017-03 thru 2020-09. MTT numbers 1 through 187 were mixed live and broadcast through Anonradio.

Movement Through Thought on djcev.com, mirrored to mixcloud.com/djcev, 2020-09 thru the present. The current incarnation of MTT as a mix series and/or some kind of low-tech podcast.
