Tron (1982)

The TV announcer voice says: And now: Tron. Starring Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner.

Taped off TV - Fox 49 KPDX - some time in 1995. (There's an advertisement for the Jerky Boys movie during one of the commercial breaks, which conveniently dates the broadcast). The screenshots you see here are of an x264 (CRF 23) digital recording of an EP Mode VHS tape. I wonder how many generations down the line this is.

This is how I've always watched Tron. Low-res, 4:3 pan & scan, edited, with commercials.

Ninja III: The Domination. VHS, bought for $1 at my local Goodwill. An ex-Hollywood Video tape.

Recorded/digitized with ffmpeg, an old BT848 card, and FreeBSD. 40G raw (QP 0) x264, compressed down to a CRF 21 1.7G x264 mkv.

A pretty good looking tape. Much better than some others I've done recently.

MPV 0.26 has hit FreeBSD ports, just upgraded. A few observations:

dvdnav seems to be working much better.

Replaygain functionality has been restored (using the --replaygain-* set of options).

And... I get errors when using the OSS audio output driver under FreeBSD. "[ao/oss] Audio device returned broken buffer state" spammed continuously. The message can be suppressed with "--msg-level=ao/oss=fatal". I wonder what that's about...

Stanton SCS.4DJ Notes & Review

The SCS.4DJ is a "Digital DJ Mixstation" made by Stanton Magnetics. It's a little standalone workstation unit with a "Coldfire" ARM (ARM10TDMI?) board in it that runs Linux (2.6.14?) and a custom set of DJ software. The unit seems to have been engineered, both hardware and software, by a company called IVL Audio. The current equivalent product, functionality-wise, would be something like the Pioneer XDJ-RX.

MTT No. 020 / A Million Freaks

MTT020 Spectrogram

Somewhat messily mixed west-coast electro this week.

There's quite a bit of grunting and moaning in this recording, and what sounds like sampled porn dialog in one song, so be advised this one probably isn't safe for the kids.

This show (like most of MTT Year 1) is no longer available for download here. Get in touch with me at the email address listed at the top of this page if you want a copy of it.

Went music shopping today... using my web browser.

Picked up digital copies of:

"Optical" by Nullptr
"Inspiring Memories" by Andrew Red Hand.
"Living In Unity" by Smith & Mighty.
"Pounding System" by Dub Syndicate.
"Liquid Earth" and "The Beckoning / Skyland" by Arcon 2.

And that's my music budget for the month.

So I'm finally getting around to recording my 2x12" copy of "Vegas" by The Crystal Method. I look it up on discogs and see that the vinyl hasn't been reprinted since 1997. Look up at the price and... egads.

It's selling for about 10x what I paid for it.

I'm not sure if that's sellers on discogs being unreasonable, or if the record is really that scarce / desirable. Color me surprised in any case.
