The Driller Killer (1979, dir. Abel Ferrara). First watch.
Total chaos, exploitation, sleaze. Grimy and pessimistic. Punk New York. Often uncomfortable to watch.
Frustrated painter Reno (played by the director) can't pay his bills and has to put up with a punk band rehearsing in the apartment next door. He goes mad and takes to the streets at night to kill people with a power drill. Reno's girlfriends Carol and Pamela, unaware of his killing spree, put up with his ill temper. Carol considers returning to her husband. Grim ending.
So it's a horror movie, kind of a slasher, but unconventional. Some wild shots of 1979 New York in this. I appreciate the energy but it's pretty gnarly. Not sure how hard I should be thinking about ~themes~ with this one.
I could see this becoming funny on repeat viewings.
Ferrara apparently said this on the commentary track: "If I paid to see a movie called The Driller Killer, and this was it, I would punch the director in the fuckin' head."
