MTT 187 / I Came Here To Tell You

MTT187 Spectrogram

I needed to do something different, so: an hour of ambient music. Sad, sleepy, and distant. I don't know much about ambient, and it's maybe a little awkward or careless to mix it like this, but I hope it's enjoyable nonetheless.

Due to technical difficulties this installment of Movement Through Thought did not broadcast or archive correctly at aNONradio. As such, the mix had to be re-recorded: right-click save-as here or on the spectrogram above to download, or check it out at mixcloud.

  18. NNYNYX / Serial Experiments 59:41

There are a few releases I'd like to highlight this week, starting with the classic Stalker by Robert Rich and Brian Lustmord. I suspect this is a very well known album and I'm just out of the loop, but it's worth repeating that it's terrific. The tracklist link above takes you to the album's entry at the Hearts Of Space website which will in turn take you to amazon if you want to purchase it.

The second is J. Wiltshire's album Resa on Musar Recordings, who were kind enough to send me a promo copy of the album. (Thank you). The sixth track In The Position plays here as track 10. It's a hazy album, sometimes warm and playful, sometimes more distant. I like it. And it gave this installment of MTT its name, though I misremembered the exact words.

My last highlight is Xela's album Exorcism, nearly a third of which plays at the end of this mix. I think I heard about Exorcism through Warren Ellis's old blog back in 2012, I downloaded it and loved it immediately. The sendspace link in the original blogpost for the album is down, and so is the soundcloud upload. Fortunately a user named Strelok has uploaded the whole thing to youtube: track 1 Charm, track 2 Recitation, track 3 Potion. This is one I often return to, so give it a listen if you haven't heard it before.

This is my last broadcast on aNONradio, the last new episode of Movement Through Thought to be transmitted there. I won't go into detail why - I don't care for drama, and it's really not worth the time. I'd rather not distract from the music. The music is more important.

I'd like to get back on the radio somewhere, but that will take time I think. For now I will keep up the practice by uploading shows to mixcloud, starting next week. Something for the beginning of October.

187 is a scary number.

MTT No. 101 / Too Warm For This Kind Of Weather

MTT101 Spectrogram

Ambient & downtempo to close the month. ~75 BPM, a little creepy, a little sleepy.

  1. F.O.T.N. / Train Window 00:00
  2. Skull vs. Ice / Operation Mind Control 02:18
  3. Access To Arasaka / We Carried 08:38
  4. User48736353001 / 7 Dub Cliker + 0hz 12:20
  5. The Black Dog / Sleep Deprivation 2 17:21
  6. 2814 / 真実の恋 22:40
  7. Psilonaut / Third From The Sun 28:25
  8. Bola / Soleiele 31:06
  9. Autechre / Stud 35:21
  10. So Takahashi / Moca 38:20
  11. Autechre / Yulquen 55:50

So Takahashi's Moca is my highlight this week. I bought that record used some time in the early 2000s for the locked grooves on side B. It took around five years before I sat down and paid attention to the A side, Moca. It's a real journey. I love the last 6 minutes in particular, for the gorgeous pads.

This show is pretty loose. I wish I'd remembered to play Stud in full - Moca works better mixed in to the end of Stud, instead of that breakdown. Ah well. Something to remember for next time.

MTT No. 083 / Armchair Tour

MTT083 Spectrogram

Downtempo, IDM, a bit of old demoscene, a bit of vaporwave. Chill-out music, mostly.

Unfortunately my internet connection dropped a little over halfway through this show. Robot DJ Kumata, aNONradio's mascot DJ, played J-Pop and soundtracks during this period - from roughly 34:48 to 41:32 in the recording.

  2. RS3 / Optic Embrace 04:16
  3. Dogon / Fool's Walk 09:13
  4. Zoomin' ft. Fay Saphirah / Purify Myself (Instr.) 12:12
  5. User18081971 / 14 Cornish Spreek5b (St. Nectan S Glen Waterfalls Mix) 17:37
  6. User48736353001 / (Watery Big EZ) 20:48
  7. DeepWoods / Heavy Rain 23:06
  8. Creta Kano / Skyway 81 26:59
  9. t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者 / 蒸気涙 31:07
  10. Quantum Leap / Sofa Music 34:30
  11. Internet dropout; robot DJ Kumata takes over from 34:48 to 41:32
  12. Cabaret Voltaire / Harmonic Parallel 41:33
  13. Orbital / Times Fly (Slow) 44:24
  14. Amon Tobin / Piranha Breaks 48:41
  15. [sub] / Sensualism 51:49
  16. Boymerang / Secret Life 56:54

I picked up Creta Kano's Skyway Motel this month (from Boomkat) and that served as the inspiration for this hour. I'm happy and a bit surprised the mix from Heavy Rain to Skyway 81 worked. And then on to proper vaporwave from t e l e p a t h テレパシー能力者...

Two tracks were taken from the Space Night Vol. VIII compilation on Elektrolux. Specifically track 4 Purify Myself and track 10 Sofa Music. It's a sweet comp, one I've played tracks from before, see MTT018 and MTT044.

This was a pretty good set! Good for a quick few hours picking tracks and winging it, anyway. Sad about the connection drop, but that'll happen from time to time. I might rework this into something more cohesive in the future.

  17. Cylob / Jeepin' 44:03
  18. Secret Frequency Crew / Black Moss Caves Part 1 45:57
  19. Neotropic / Joe Luke 51:21

The two opening tracks and the closing track are from Neotropic's excellent album White Rabbits. I picked up the 2xLP release in a used bin about five years ago; it took several years for me to appreciate it. Now I love it - Joe Luke, in particular is awesome. I don't see Neotropic talked about often enough. I have their first two albums and White Rabbits, and they're all good. There's even a new album, The Absolute Elsewhere, released just a few days ago.

About halfway into selecting music for this set I noticed a swamp & monsters theme. The songs Swamp Thing, Fishy Body, Valley Of Freaks, Moss Caves, etc. As I said on COM, I like to think the character Swamp Thing would appreciate this music.

I have only one major complaint with this mix: the transition from 85 Loop to Kyoko should have been done differently. But I can live with that. Not bad for a few hours of prep and very little sleep.

  12. Dagobert / La Boom 45:40
  13. Vector Lovers / Shinjuku Girl 50:21
  14. Jean-Paul Bondy ft. Rochelle Vincente / Monochrome 53:09

This show is made up of a bunch of odd pieces. Waiting To Fly on the netlabel Hellven, vaporwave ambient tunes by 2814 and Rashida Prime, the two Eschaton tracks on Subtle Audio vol. III, and so on. I feel like there are a lot of stories here.

I don't have much more to say than that... this is a stack of tunes I like at a common tempo, thrown together at the last second while dead tired. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. A good way to wind down the month.

  14. Lanark Artefax / Touch Absence (Intimidating Stillness Mix) 37:57
  15. SMX / Sleep 42:00
  16. Gescom / Puzl 46:37

Three tracks (3, 12 and 13) are from the label Swishcotheque (discogs). Their catalog is worth digging through for good IDM / braindance; I recommend the releases by Delayscape, Indulin, Pad Foundation, and R21.

RAC's Structures EP deserves a special mention. It's a very good (and overlooked) mid-'90s Warp release; just about every track on it is gold. Continua in particular is great and always gets my feet moving.

Lanark Artefax's Touch Absence (Intimidating Stillness Mix) is the direct inspiration for this mix. The reason I lined up and played these tracks. It's stonkingly good. Hopefully the original mix on Whities 11 will be made available digitally, someday. Shoutout to Megaphysics for introducing me to it.

And yes, that's a fourteen minute song at the end of this mix. There's no way to top or interrupt Puzl by Gescom. (Though I do certainly try to mash Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don't Stop) into the breakdown, with questionable results.) So it's a cheat, but hopefully a forgivable one.
