Another thing to mention is that Rude 66's classic Overkill
is playing at -6% in this mix. On second listen it sounds a bit off,
a bit wrong, though to some extent that was my intention. Maybe it
would have been better a little slower. Check the link above to
hear Overkill at its original speed if you're unfamiliar with it.
I'm happy with this. We've been having a, ah, weather event where
I am in Oregon and the music choices this hour reflect that. The
performance could be better, there are some annoying unfinished edges
in the mix, but I'm always going to say that. Oh, and my little vocal
intro wasn't archived correctly, but that's OK.
The first release I'd like to highlight in this is Pearson Sound's
Alien Mode EP, released a couple of months ago on the great
Hessle Audio. I like the title track Alien Mode a lot, a
breaks workout with some fun vocal distortion (timestretching?). It shows
up here near the end of the hour. There's a very good tune on the B-side
of the EP too which I'll probably play in a few weeks.
Immediately after Alien Mode is Low Orbit Satellite's
Objects In Space from their album Objects In Space.
I spent an afternoon about six months
ago going through the releases on Low Orbit Satellite's bandcamp, and I
think Objects In Space is my favorite. It's four strong trancey electro
tracks and one ambient dub techno track, very much my thing.
Tracks 7 through 10 form a little future garage segment. I don't know
much about the style and only have a few tracks (most of it sounds like
Burial's Untrue to me) but I enjoy it and it's fun to play every now
and then. Mixing future garage is a challenge, one I haven't practiced
much, so that segment is maybe a little rocky.
That's all the commentary for #184 I have in me. I'll be back next week
with something slower, returning to my usual trend of reducing tempo
through the month.
Most of the selections this hour come from four labels:
Deep Medi Musik (tracks 6, 13, and 17), Punch Drunk
(tracks 2 and 4), Sentry (tracks 10 and 11), and Tectonic
(tracks 3, 14, and 15). Classic dubstep labels, with Sentry being the
newcomers here. All four have their releases available on bandcamp,
and are absolutely worth checking out.
There are two new releases I'd like to highlight today, the first being
Danny Daze's Protocol 305 on Schematic, which just came
out earlier this month.
I'm playing Twisted at -6% in this mix, which drops it roughly a
semitone, puts it right around 70 BPM, and makes it sound dope as hell.
A little Miami flavor in an otherwise mostly UK set.
Last shout out is to Seattle's DJ Struggle whose 2007 Struggle Dubs 5
mix is where I get the transition from Roll With The Punches to
Channel One, and a large part of where my taste in dubstep
comes from in general. (That and Monkeytek & Ryan Organ's old
club night Various).

The first release I'd like to highlight is Autobot-1000 &
DJ Di'jital's Bass Programmer EP, first released on
Twilight 76 in 2002, and available now from Di'jital's bandcamp
page. I picked this up recently and it's terrific. Bass Programmer is
a legit technobass anthem; the original mix, played here, is smooth,
where Di'jital's mix is rougher and tougher. The other two tracks both
sound Kraftwerk-y to me, and are very strong. (Atomic
belongs on Radioactivity, Input/Output belongs on Computer World).
This is a really great EP, so go check it out.
All of these tracks are good, of course, but I've delayed writing this
long enough and feel the need to stop here. I'll be back next week at
the same time and place with ~70 BPM bass music, mostly dubstep. It
feels right to halve the tempo to close out the month.

I feel like there's a whole modern electrobass scene here, one that
isn't talked about much on the outlets and discussion forums I follow.
I've got a bunch of this style from the 2000s period -
Debonaire Records, Exceleration, Frajile,
Monotone. Then 2008-2015 gave us Bass Frequency Productions,
Black Magic US, and CHP Recordings (that I'm aware of).
I'm not sure what's going on right now; I know Monotone and
Frajile Recordings are active, but that's it. I'm excited
to see where the Florida electrobass sound goes this decade.
I'm hoping for a return to a more minimal, spare, synth-y sound,
more like the early 2000s.
And now I've talked too much. I love playing this stuff but it only
ever feels appropriate in the summer months, August in particular.
I had a track cued up to play after Pledge Your Allegiance but
the timing didn't quite work with the vocal outro, unfortunately.

Most of these are tracks played before on this radio show, and tracks

These selections aren't all strictly from Florida, so this is more of
a mood, a bass attitude.
I do want to draw attention to one record, though, and that's
Miami Bass Classics 5 on Wicked Mix, where the special mixes
of tracks 18 and 20 come from. It's a remix service record that I
picked up at Platinum Records some time in the early 2000s.
As it says on the label: "DJ USE ONLY, NOT FOR PUBLIC DISPLAY OR
COMMERCIAL USE". The mixes all work to make the tracks sound much
more west-coast to me, breaks and electro by way of California. (Even
the Unknown DJ track sounds somehow more west-coast). I like
it; I like these versions more now than when I first bought
