Track four Black Electric is from the only release by that band,
their 2000 self-titled EP on Puzzlebox. Colors and Come To Me,
A2 and B1, are also great; I'm sure I'll play them here eventually.
There's a bunch of Puzzlebox on Beatport but I couldn't find
this one, unfortunately.
A couple of old tracker mods snuck in, specifically track 13
Arsa Bamk by Dune (best known as Brothomstates)
and track 14 Honeynut Loops by Chavez. The latter of those
is from the netlabel Milk, which I plan to write a post
about here (eventually).
This is a pretty scatterbrained selection, and it could've used
one or two more tracks to break up the long ones, but I'm happy. Good
for a few hours of planning. I'll be back next week with... not sure.
Logical Aggression @ Ground Kontrol / February 2020
A total of six tracks in this mix are from Om Unit's excellent label
Cosmic Bridge. Tracks 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, and 12; about 20 minutes
of music. Track 5 Fumes by Om Unit himself is from his Aeolian EP on
Civil Music, so not quite Cosmic Bridge, but certainly adjacent.
My favorite of those releases is the super moody We Are Ghosts Now by
Margari's Kid. They're all good, though, so go hit up their bandcamp.
Aphelian by Eschaton and Bermuda Triangulated by Earl Grey are
from the third Subtle Audio compilation. I've played both those tracks
on this show before, but they deserved another spin. (And they both fit
the theme I was going for here).
The last 20 minutes is of course more recognizable as drum & bass. The
weird track in this segment is #16 Badboy Sound by Amen Fyre,
from the 2010 Dogs On Acid "Grid" Old School Jungle Competition.
I found that release through Wozowski's
mix of the competition entries. Both the mix and the compilation
are worth checking out as a fun jungle throwback that predates the current
trend. And give Wozowski a listen anyway, he's always putting out quality
Megaphysics & I are playing music at the arcade next week, so the
next mix will be something mellow. Maybe some recent beat-driven
This is the third annual MTT tracker music show. Weird breaks, drum & bass,
and IDM. The mix features 12 (!) tracks from the Assembly demoparty
(including two from 2019), plus a few from the 2018 and 2019 Revision party.
My internet connection dropped during the live broadcast of this show,
unfortunately. I couldn't leave it that way, so I re-recorded the whole hour:
right-click save as here or on the spectrogram above to download it.
This mix is also available at mixcloud.
Tracks three and four are both from this year's Assembly
Tracked Music Competition; Parking Lot In Space took first place,
Left Behind took sixth. Be sure to check out the rest of this year's entries,
as they are all terrific.
My favorite from this hour is Keith by Dascon & Mygg & Bonefish. It
took first place at the Revision 2019 Tracked Music Competition,
and deservedly so. It's very well programmed. There are a bunch of super
creative pattern jumps and speed changes in the song, and the thing just
sounds good. Download that one and watch it in a tracker, or check out
one of the videos on youtube.
One interesting thing about tracker music is that there are multiple ways
to set playback speed. There are usually three settings: a tempo setting
which is a single BPM (defaults to 125), ticks per row (or speed), and
rows per beat.
By changing speed or rows per beat and leaving tempo alone, you end
up with interesting multiples of tempo.
The last fifteen minutes of this mix is an example of this; five tracks all
at ~187.5 BPM, or a tempo of 125 and a speed of 4. (Though I'll admit I
cheated with a couple to get them to fit).
I'll close by saying: sorry this took so long to upload. There were some
problems to overcome in the recording of this one. But, as always, the music
is good. I'm glad to have finally gotten some proper old Dune in one of
these shows. There's one more broadcast before the end of the year; that'll
be a mellow one, I think.
Logical Aggression @ Ground Kontrol / November 2019
Megaphysics and I played our last show of the year at
Ground Kontrol Arcade last night. (The last Wednesday in December
falls on the 25th, so no show that day). It was the day before
Thanksgiving, we had a good crowd, and it was a pretty good show.
I brought a mixture of drum & bass, electro, footwork, and synth-y stuff.
There are parts of MTT143 and MTT079 in this, as well
as the Lightspace to Dŵr Budr mix from MTT141. Here's my tracklist:
Thanks to everybody for coming out, thanks (as always) to
Ground Kontrol for having us, and thanks to Megaphysics for helping
me while away the early morning hours. As mentioned above there won't be
a Logical Aggression show in December, as that day falls on the 25th. We'll
be back in January.
Another last Wednesday, another show at Ground Kontrol Arcade.
DJ Megaphysics opened the night with a good set of oldschool
electro and 2000s Dutch electronic (Viewlexx, Creme, etc.).
Then I took over from 11:30 PM until close. Here's what I played:
A bunch of different styles here; just scribbling all over the
page for two hours and change. I played three tracks from Pure
Space PS001.1, a great new comp from Australia. Also
featured a bunch of music from Om Unit's Cosmic Bridge label,
including two tracks from their new release We Are Ghosts Now
by Margari's Kid.
Two excellent sets, four and a half hours of good music. Thanks
as always to Ground Kontrol for having us, and to everyone hanging
