MTT162 Spectrogram

Fast breaks and electro, slow DnB, and a couple tracker tunes. Some weirdness.

  1. Clan Of Xymox / Theme II 00:00
  2. Il.Ek.Tro / Threads Part One 01:27
  3. The Advent / Work Dat 05:10
  4. Black Electric / Black Electric 09:10
  5. Headnoaks / Power 2 Da Beatz (Disko 69 Remix) 13:13
  6. AS1 / Solar Lifestyle 15:40
  7. Thugwidow / Mother Earth Can Die For All I Care 18:55
  8. Silicon / Rules Of Engagement 22:34
  9. Dr. Futurist / Spatial Translations 26:53
  10. Marco Bernardi / Reality Check 29:02
  11. Adam Jay / Warp Drive 32:02
  12. dgoHn / Benny's Gone Missing 36:34
  13. Dune / Arsa Bamk 37:58
  14. Chavez / Honeynut Loops 40:28
  15. Omni Trio / Mystic Stepper (Feel Better) 43:17
  16. Aphex Twin / Polynomial-C 47:58
  17. Thugwidow / Temporary Conciousness 51:46
  18. Screwtec / Water Gate 57:12

This mix was thrown together to play tracks from I Tried Calling But Your Phone Must Have Been Off, Thugwidow's new album on No Problema Tapes. It's a cool combination of elements - modern ambient production (vaporwave?) and unusually slow jungle/DnB. Like, 1993 hardcore breakbeat slow. I'm really into it. It turns out Thugwidow has a bunch of releases, among them a sweet collab with Sangam.

Track four Black Electric is from the only release by that band, their 2000 self-titled EP on Puzzlebox. Colors and Come To Me, A2 and B1, are also great; I'm sure I'll play them here eventually. There's a bunch of Puzzlebox on Beatport but I couldn't find this one, unfortunately.

A couple of old tracker mods snuck in, specifically track 13 Arsa Bamk by Dune (best known as Brothomstates) and track 14 Honeynut Loops by Chavez. The latter of those is from the netlabel Milk, which I plan to write a post about here (eventually).

Mystic Stepper (Feel Better) is one of the few genuine breakbeat hardcore tracks I have, and the only Moving Shadow record I own. Most of Moving Shadow is available on Beatport, but this one is missing. A few alternate versions of Mystic Stepper are available: Feel Better (Foul Play Remix), Feel Good '95, and Feel Good (Original In Demand Mix), but I like the one featured here the best. And then cheating in Polynomial-C... you know, it was right there, I had to do it.

This is a pretty scatterbrained selection, and it could've used one or two more tracks to break up the long ones, but I'm happy. Good for a few hours of planning. I'll be back next week with... not sure. Something slower.

MTT152 Spectrogram

Drum & Bass. Halftime, minimal (I guess?), and a couple old '90s tracks. A whole bunch of these tunes are from Om Unit's label Cosmic Bridge.

  2. Jus Wan / Miles Away 02:02
  3. Vromm / Restart 05:03
  4. Moresounds / Ruff Times 08:51
  5. Om Unit / Fumes 12:29
  6. The Aesthetics / Girl In Yer Tree 15:18
  7. Margari's Kid / Titan 17:34
  8. Oliver Yorke / Totem 19:49
  9. Anonymi / Venturi (Jason oS Remix) 23:13
  10. Eschaton / Aphelian 26:36
  11. Crypticz / The Crawler 29:37
  12. Margari's Kid / Darkness Is Older Than Light 33:00
  13. Earl Grey / Bermuda Triangulated 35:38
  14. dBridge / Creatures Of Habit 38:14
  15. Hooverphonic / 2Wicky (DJ Pulse Dub) 41:16

  17. Sully / Flock 48:01
  18. Intensity / Generations 51:48
  19. Art Of Noise / Crusoe (Aquasky Remix) 56:46

A total of six tracks in this mix are from Om Unit's excellent label Cosmic Bridge. Tracks 3, 4, 7, 8, 11, and 12; about 20 minutes of music. Track 5 Fumes by Om Unit himself is from his Aeolian EP on Civil Music, so not quite Cosmic Bridge, but certainly adjacent. My favorite of those releases is the super moody We Are Ghosts Now by Margari's Kid. They're all good, though, so go hit up their bandcamp.

Aphelian by Eschaton and Bermuda Triangulated by Earl Grey are from the third Subtle Audio compilation. I've played both those tracks on this show before, but they deserved another spin. (And they both fit the theme I was going for here).

The last 20 minutes is of course more recognizable as drum & bass. The weird track in this segment is #16 Badboy Sound by Amen Fyre, from the 2010 Dogs On Acid "Grid" Old School Jungle Competition. I found that release through Wozowski's mix of the competition entries. Both the mix and the compilation are worth checking out as a fun jungle throwback that predates the current trend. And give Wozowski a listen anyway, he's always putting out quality DJ mixes.

Megaphysics & I are playing music at the arcade next week, so the next mix will be something mellow. Maybe some recent beat-driven vaporwave tunes.

MTT147 Spectrogram

This is the third annual MTT tracker music show. Weird breaks, drum & bass, and IDM. The mix features 12 (!) tracks from the Assembly demoparty (including two from 2019), plus a few from the 2018 and 2019 Revision party.

My internet connection dropped during the live broadcast of this show, unfortunately. I couldn't leave it that way, so I re-recorded the whole hour: right-click save as here or on the spectrogram above to download it. This mix is also available at mixcloud.

This post was updated on 2020/10/06.

  1. Cube / Illumination 00:00
  2. Complex / Beyond Reality 01:54
  3. Serpent & Rapture / Parking Lot In Space 03:33
  4. Buzzer / Left Behind 06:24
  5. Purple Motion / Purple Sky II 08:58
  6. Dascon & Mygg & Bonefish / Keith 12:23
  7. Rb387 / The Vital Synthetic 64-0 15:36
  8. Necros / Introspection 16:48
  9. Supernao / Elektrik Dew 19:16
  10. Vapor / Landscapes 20:24
  11. Illusion / Azlak 22:33
  12. Norfair / Dreamplay 25:25
  13. Ganja / Late Night Session 27:55
  14. Bacter / Just Bacter 30:18
  15. Goldcrest / Groove-A-Thon 32:42
  16. Xhale / Reflektive 35:21
  17. Prob. / Jazzy Vibesz 37:35
  18. Falcon / Tasting Malibu 40:03
  19. RS3 / Refraction Reprise 41:47
  20. Dune / Control E 44:59
  21. Zaril / Malkavian Rush 48:42
  22. JPX / No Way Out 51:31
  23. JCole / A-Twinkle 54:05
  24. Dune / Nobody Dreaming 56:22

Tracks three and four are both from this year's Assembly Tracked Music Competition; Parking Lot In Space took first place, Left Behind took sixth. Be sure to check out the rest of this year's entries, as they are all terrific.

My favorite from this hour is Keith by Dascon & Mygg & Bonefish. It took first place at the Revision 2019 Tracked Music Competition, and deservedly so. It's very well programmed. There are a bunch of super creative pattern jumps and speed changes in the song, and the thing just sounds good. Download that one and watch it in a tracker, or check out one of the videos on youtube.

One interesting thing about tracker music is that there are multiple ways to set playback speed. There are usually three settings: a tempo setting which is a single BPM (defaults to 125), ticks per row (or speed), and rows per beat. By changing speed or rows per beat and leaving tempo alone, you end up with interesting multiples of tempo. The last fifteen minutes of this mix is an example of this; five tracks all at ~187.5 BPM, or a tempo of 125 and a speed of 4. (Though I'll admit I cheated with a couple to get them to fit).

I'll close by saying: sorry this took so long to upload. There were some problems to overcome in the recording of this one. But, as always, the music is good. I'm glad to have finally gotten some proper old Dune in one of these shows. There's one more broadcast before the end of the year; that'll be a mellow one, I think.
