  18. Duran Duran / Save A Prayer (Anodyne Remix) 55:58
  19. Portland / The Return Of Richard Belmont 58:40

I featured Legowelt near the beginning of the show again this week, with a track from his new album Pancakes With Mist. The release of Pancakes somehow slipped by me, or I'd have played Shadows In The Street Life weeks ago. It's very good (I like it anyway) and currently listed as name-your-price, so go check it out.

The Duran Duran remix at the end of this hour is of course from MASK 500. The copy I have, the copy that's played here, is the 2009 bootleg. I've both played and written about it before, and I'm sure I will again. Might be worth writing up a post dedicated to it.

I didn't leave myself enough time to read the tracklist out loud at the end of this show, unfortunately. Sorry to the folks who got left out. I don't have too much more to say about this one; it was fine. The last 20 minutes are particularly good, I think.

Thanks to everybody out there listening. I'll be back next week to continue my tradition of playing bass music in August, so prepare yourself for at least two weeks of Miami Bass.

MTT178 Spectrogram

  1. Hadamard / Earth Is An Oasis 00:00
  2. Raiders Of The Lost Arp / Arrival 01:50
  3. Legowelt / The Soul Of A City 05:08
  4. Coil / The Snow 09:57
  5. $tinkworx / Calimari 12:54
  6. D.I.E. / Dutch Friends 17:08
  7. Luke Hess / There Is Hope 20:35
  8. Omar-S / Flying Blind 23:47
  9. Transparent Sound & Scape One & Karoshi / Solid Grooves 28:11
  10. Will Hofbauer / Idris 31:46
  11. Zwart Licht Kommando / The Other One 36:32
  12. Orgue Electronique / Panic At Charles De Gaulle 40:15
  13. Juan Atkins / I Love You 42:53
  14. Men Of Science / Acid Dawn 47:01
  15. Skatebård / June Nights South Of Siena 50:17
  16. Galaxy Toobin' / The Day Of The Duel Is Approaching 55:05

Not too much to say about this one. I think the only new(ish) track here is the bouncy Idris by Will Hofbauer from 2018's NV017 on Neo Violence. The rest of this mix is old favorites. Legowelt's Soul Of A City, The Snow by Coil, The Day Of The Duel Is Approaching by Galaxy Toobin', to name a few.

Dutch Friends by D.I.E. (Detroit In Effect) is what probably inspired this mix. I love that track, and I love its video, but only just recently picked up a digital copy of it on Clone WCS MAP 003. I've never seen any of the original M.A.P. vinyl in record stores in Portland, not sure why.

And that's what I've got this week. I'll be back on Thursday the 30th (in my timezone, anyway) to play something chill.

Shoutout to the Men Of Science.

All You Need, Scenes by State Logik & Jacob. On Narcotix Inc, released in 2000. Vinyl, 12". Flac 16bit/44.1khz, ~137M. Tracklist from the side B label (with corrections from the discogs release page), durations from my stored recordings:

No.Artist / Title BPMDur.
A1.State Logik / Electro Boogie 11906:25
A2.State Logik / All You Need 13006:34
B1.Jacob / Scene 1 12302:34
B2.Jacob ft. G. Pole / Scene 2 11602:35
B3.Jacob / Scene 3 09502:35
B4.Jacob / Scene 4 12002:34

A note on the discogs page for this 12" states that the A-side track titles are the reverse of what the center label says. That makes some sense, A1 sounds more like an "electro boogie" than A2 does. The tracklist above reflects that note.

The State Logik tracks are the reason I picked up this record. Both are warm, smooth, minimalist electro jams. Sampled drums, a snare that snaps, a bass synth, pads, short vocoded lyrics, sound FX. These aren't the flashiest songs, I can see how a listener could find them underwhelming, but they're easy to mix and I love 'em to bits. I've played both of these tracks on the radio before, so you can hear a few minutes of All You Need in MTT177 and a few minutes of Electro Boogie in MTT015.

The B-side is more complicated. It's dirtier, harder, more distorted. Scene 1 is a Tusken Raiders Sexy Sandpeople style jam, tough drum machine beats. Scene 2 seems to be in 3/4 (6/8?) and has a jazzy sound to it with its drum samples and nice swirling pad. Scene 3 is a chunky swamp beat, one for the bog creatures. I can't work out the meter of Scene 4, one part is maybe running in 4/4 and the rest is doing something else. In any case it's another strong breakbeat sketch, like the rest of these Scenes. Scene 3 can be heard back in MTT074; I have yet to play the others for any recorded mixes.

There's a chunk of Narcotix Inc available at beatport and at junodownload, but I couldn't find this release. Which is a shame, as the price for a used copy over at discogs looks a bit unreasonable right now. So my recommendation is, if you're ever out digging and spot this for a few bucks, pick it up.

This record was in my bag for just about every Logical Aggression summer show at Ground Kontrol since 2010, making it an arcade classic.

Shoutout to the fine folks at 360 Vinyl who filed in this in their electro section. I'd have never seen it otherwise.

  8. Crossmods / Why Is It So Freaky 22:57
  9. Computor Rockers / Tech-No-Rock (Full Version) 25:27
  10. N.W.A. / Panic Zone 29:35
  11. Aux 88 / Technology 32:23
  12. Cyber-Funk / Untitled [UR0117 A1] 35:46

  16. The Egyptian Lover / Party 48:16
  17. EPG / Party Rock (Assimilation Mix) 49:31
  18. Newcleus / Computer Age (Push The Button) 51:12
  19. E.V.I.A.N. And The Atlantis Posse / Robo Tech (Bonus City) 56:39
  20. Mandroid / Horizon 58:07

So most of this is old, and most of it is repeats from previous radio shows. But there are a few new tracks. First, Cosmic Jam by Scape One, from his February 2020 album Cosmic Trax. A sweet, smooth tribute to Jive Rhythm Trax. Second is Why Is It So Freaky by Crossmods, from their Crossmods EP on Crobot Muzik, included here because it plays into the "freak" theme and because it's a cool track.

A lot of this is records that were often in my bag when playing at Ground Kontrol. Cyclone Attack by the Knightz of Bass, Tech-No-Rock by Computor Rockers, Electro Boogie by State Logik, Pop And Lock by Eggfooyoung. I've got a blog post in the works about that State Logik & Jacob record, will try to complete that soon.

Some missed cues in this and some dodgy transitions, but hey, it's a live mix for the radio. I'll be back next week with, as usual, something slower. Not sure what that selection will look like yet.

  13. The Bokanovsky Process / My Electroc!d (Miotek Remix) 45:15
  14. Dusko Janevski / Torus 49:26
  15. D.I.E. / Keep Hanging 53:40
  16. Model 500 / The Messenger 57:34

First off, apologies to Ion Driver for getting your name wrong when reading the tracklist out loud. I slipped up and said Ion Robot instead. Sorry about that. bbRobot is from 33, one of two releases Ion Driver has on Digital Distortions. Both those are worth checking out, and both are currently listed name-your-price.

The second thing I'd like to call attention to is the Many Worlds EP by Permutation. It's a sweet combination of electro, IDM, and techno; very smooth. Memories Of The Future is my favorite from the release, though Evolution is the one that made it into this mix. Shoutout and thanks to Dmitry of Permutation for getting in touch.

And last I'll highlight Keep Hanging by D.I.E. (AKA Detroit In Effect) from The Men You'll Never See Pt2 on Clone (and reissued on Clone West Coast Series in 2018). The reissue replaces Space Travel with Programming, a fair trade. I've had Keep Hanging on my mind lately; this felt like a good time to play it. If you feel yourself slipping, tie a knot, and don't let go.

I'll return next week with something slower (repeating my usual pattern of reducing tempo week to week throughout the month). It's been a while since I've played a chunk of '80s electro, so maybe I'll do that.

MTT175 Spectrogram

  8. Heuristic Audio / Nocturne 26:22
  9. Warlock / Mala Cara 30:37
  10. Mystic Letter K / Dust 33:55
  11. DVS NME / Chrononaut 37:42

  16. UR / Death Of My Neighborhood 52:57
  17. Drexciya / Antivapor Waves 55:28
  18. The Advent / Gamma Rays 58:02

The new tracks here are Client_03's Suspect Dispenser, False Persona's Danger Close (on the excellent Phalanx Pt. 3 comp on Typeless), Grammar Of Movement's IOI, and Asymmetry by Zobol. All are available at the links above, so if you like what you hear then check out the full release(s).

I've done the Nocturne to Mala Cara mix on this show before, back in MTT004. I really like that transition. It's a holdover from playing vinyl at the arcade, one I like to revisit every now and then. The first couple of Dirty Needles EPs are being slept on, I think. It seems to be a lot of the same crew that were on Rag & Bone. Something to think about.

I've got one final note this week: I noticed while collecting links for the tracklist that The Advent has made Light Years Away available on his bandcamp. That's an exceptional album, one that's been unavailable digitally until now (as far as I know). The Advent working in Drexciya mode, though still essentially Advent. Gamma Rays is the track off it in this mix (which I sadly talked over).

And that's all I've got. Don't know what I'll do next time; I'll probably continue my pattern of starting fast and getting slower throughout the month.
