MTT096 Spectrogram

Ambient, downtempo and breakbeat-y things on the program this week. Winding down after playing the arcade yesterday.

This show (like most of MTT Year 2) is no longer available for download here. Get in touch with me at the email address listed at the top of this page if you want a copy of it.

FSOL, Neotropic, two tracks from Freezone 1: The Phenomenology of Ambient, a couple tracks from the Elektrolux label. Good stuff.

Kitten Moon by Fluke stands out. I recently listened to that album again for the first time in years, and it holds up well. Though it is hard to hear the first two tracks without thinking of the movies (and commercials, etc.) they appeared in.

But the highlight here is Desire by Carl Craig, for sure. I've wanted to play that for months, and I can't think of a better way to close 2018.

Logical Aggression @ Ground Kontrol / December 2018

Logical Aggression at Ground Kontrol was last night. DJ Megaphysics was out of town, so I played music from 9 PM until close. The selection was a mixture of MTT 095 and 094, plus some tracks that were in my notes for those shows but didn't make the cut for radio.

Not too much to say beyond that. It was a good night. I wish demoscene mods sounded better loud on a big system...

  22. Ambientmove & Velvet / Sojourner 54:56
  23. Ceniq / XEQ-Complex 56:53
  24. Skaven / Second Reality III 58:23

Ten of these songs come from The Assembly demoscene party's music archive, as mentioned. Straightbackward and Let's Party Again were both released this year - the Assembly 2018 Tracked Music entries in general are excellent. Five tracks are from the Assembly 1998 Music competition. For some reason, there's only one music category in 1998, with 100+ entries. There's a lot of great downtempo, drum & bass, and IDM in that 1998 competition, some of which I plan to write about later.

Cloud City by Necros and Headroom by MD (aka Mellow-D) both come from the excellent group Five Musicians. I'm a big fan of the artists in FM, and can't recommend their music enough. Their catalog can be found at archive.org and at netlabelarchive.org.

This one's pretty good! There's a small popping noise at 24:21 that I forgot to mute, and an unfortunate zip noise at 25:12. (Digital DJ-ing problems). Also, some of these tracks were rendered with the wrong sample interpolation settings (particularly noticeable on Sojourner - that song isn't supposed to sound crunchy). I'll go back and fix those tracks as I come across them.

Shoutout to Foamhat and JWM.

MTT094 Spectrogram

Electro and IDM this week. Working through some old favorites.

This show (like most of MTT Year 2) is no longer available for download here. Get in touch with me at the email address listed at the top of this page if you want a copy of it.

  7. Silicon Scally / Proteus 15:05
  8. Monolove / Ra 19:22
  9. Lowfish / Glass and Spiders (Solvent Remix) 21:39
  10. Caro / Caro's Crystal Castle 24:12
  11. Lone Shark / Sinclair Space Age 26:43
  12. Autopilot / Tun Sie Es Jetzt Pt. 2 30:36
  13. LFO / Simon From Sydney 33:56
  14. Fresh Moods / Fever (Subtonal Remix) 37:00
  15. Blastromen / Le Nuclear Civil 39:34
  16. Radioactive Man / Uranium 43:24
  17. Neil Landstrumm vs. Tommy Akira Kiteshi / Retour de France 47:45
  18. The Parallax Corporation / Invasion 50:33
  19. Mandroid / Space Age Renegade 54:58
  20. Metamatics / Cityscape 58:18

Space Age Renegade, Invasion, and Uranium are all old favorites. Also Twilight Of The Dragon, though that's a more recent track. I'm genuinely surprised I hadn't played any of those before.

The combination of Glass And Spiders and Caro's Crystal Castle is something I had done before, specifically at the July show at Ground Kontrol this year. Adding Sinclair Space Age to that worked well, and there are a few other tracks that could be slotted in there besides. (Maybe Mr. Masutake by Scape One?).

The idea here was good but could have used more work. But, it was fun to mix, and I'm glad to have done it. Certainly glad to have played Invasion and the others.

MTT093 Spectrogram

This week's show is a selection of electro, techno and a couple old new wave / synthpop tracks. Lots of kick drums on one and three.

  20. John Foxx / 030 52:45
  21. The Other People Place / You Said You Want Me 55:47
  22. Gliese / Galaxian 59:06

Two very recent purchases are featured in this mix. First, 2.2.5 by Sol37, from the System Updates EP on Southern Outpost. That came out just this week; it's a great bonus beats / DJ tool compilation, highly recommended. Second, Whats Wrong by The Exaltics from 1000 Lights In The Sky (Part 1) on Bunker Records. This is older, a 2010 release, but I picked it up the day of the show. It's also good; probably my favorite release by The Exaltics.

For an improvised set this turned out OK. A few of the transitions don't work (Funk Release Valve to Self Destruct Sequence), and the levels are a bit wonky. But, as I'm fond of saying, the tracks are good. And I managed to play John Foxx, so this one's a winner.
