  17. Cylob / Jeepin' 44:03
  18. Secret Frequency Crew / Black Moss Caves Part 1 45:57
  19. Neotropic / Joe Luke 51:21

The two opening tracks and the closing track are from Neotropic's excellent album White Rabbits. I picked up the 2xLP release in a used bin about five years ago; it took several years for me to appreciate it. Now I love it - Joe Luke, in particular is awesome. I don't see Neotropic talked about often enough. I have their first two albums and White Rabbits, and they're all good. There's even a new album, The Absolute Elsewhere, released just a few days ago.

About halfway into selecting music for this set I noticed a swamp & monsters theme. The songs Swamp Thing, Fishy Body, Valley Of Freaks, Moss Caves, etc. As I said on COM, I like to think the character Swamp Thing would appreciate this music.

I have only one major complaint with this mix: the transition from 85 Loop to Kyoko should have been done differently. But I can live with that. Not bad for a few hours of prep and very little sleep.

Logical Aggression @ Ground Kontrol / July 2018

Posted 2018-07-26. Permalink. Tagged disco, electro, ground kontrol, logical aggression, music, techno.

Logical Aggression, the night DJ Megaphysics and I host at Ground Kontrol, was yesterday. I played after Megaphysics; here's what my set contained:

  1. Zwart Licht Kommando / Four Lane ~11:30 PM
  2. Dangerous Frontiers / South Central
  3. Legowelt / The Soul Of A City
  4. Zwart Licht Kommando / London
  5. Solitary Dancer / Birth Of Saturn
  6. Derrick May / Kaotic Harmony
  7. Shanti Celeste / SSS (OG Cut)
  8. Peverelist / Better Ways Of Living
  9. Miotek & WRTH / Our Funk (Radioactiveman Remix)
  10. Indio / Armenian Eyes
  11. Micronaut / Quadstepper
  12. Annie Hall / Sky Watcher
  13. Ion Driver / Magma
  14. Dexter / Ech Vet!
  15. Transllusion / Consequences
  16. Aril Brikha / Sweet Lullaby
  17. Pathic / Inklik
  18. State Logik / All You Need
  19. MAS 2008 / X-Perience The Reality
  20. Fatima Yamaha / Between Worlds
  21. GD Luxxe / Keep Me (DMX Krew Remix)
  22. Lowfish / Glass & Spiders (Solvent Remix)
  23. Caro / Caro's Crystal Castle
  24. Raiders Of The Lost Arp / On And On
  25. Polarius / Nemo Airfield
  26. Skatebard / Vuelo
  27. Freak Electrique / Parsec
  28. Alexander Robotnick / Computer Sourire
  29. Giorgio / I Wanna Rock You
  30. Polygamy Boys ft. Lindsay-J / Mystic Eyes
  31. SYD / Altered States
  32. Il.Ek.Tro / World Of Wire
  33. Galaxy Toobin' / The Day Of The Duel Is Approaching
  34. Rising Sun Systems / Freebasin' For David Bohm ~1:50 AM

A repeat of MTT073 and chunks of MTT072. Lazy, but I was tired, so I reached for something fresh in my mind. Glass & Spiders goes really well with Caro's Crystal Castle; that's an idea worth exploring for a future set.

  4. Miotek & WRTH / Our Funk (Radioactiveman Remix) 09:50
  5. Indio / Armenian Eyes 14:13
  6. Micronaut / Quadstepper 17:29
  7. Annie Hall / Sky Watcher 19:28
  8. Ion Driver / Magma 24:30

  14. Fatima Yamaha / Between Worlds 47:09
  15. Rude 66 / My 909 53:13
  16. S.Slot / Afterlife 57:44

I said at the beginning of this show that I was going to play electro. That turned out to be both true and not - there's a quite a bit of weirdness in this selection. The Peverelist track: is it dubstep (or maybe garage)?. Is Armenian Eyes by Indio future jazz? I know Shanti Celeste and Fatima Yamaha (AKA Bas Bron) for their house music - so what are those tracks? These genre labels start to break down. And that's interesting to me.

Having said that, my standout track this week is a more traditional electro piece: Inklik by Pathic. Available on the Pyramid Transmissions Free Sampler as well as Interstellar Communications Vol. 1, which I still need to pick up. I've mentioned Pyramid Transmissions before, and my recommendation still holds. I can't wait to play more of their tracks.

It's a goal of mine to try and play different genres, different sounding music, within each of these sets. I believe I succeeded this week, and I'm happy with the result.

Now I've got to go clean that scratchy potentiometer.

  3. Patrick Cowley / Sea Hunt 05:04
  4. Polarius / On The Seaside 08:58

  9. Late Invitation / The Invite 28:03
  10. Omar S & Kai Alce / Not Phazed 30:29

  13. Alexander Robotnick / Problèmes D'Amour (Original 12") 40:13
  14. Giorgio / I Wanna Rock You 44:02
  15. Polygamy Boys ft. Lindsay-J / Mystic Eyes 48:23
  16. SYD / Altered States 54:09
  17. Legowelt / Gina Flies To Space 55:15

Bunker, Crème Organization (a lot of Crème, 4 tracks), Viewlexx, and a small helping of proper old italo-disco thanks to Patrick Cowley, Giorgio Moroder, and Alexander Robotnick. I put this together as an excuse to play Mystic Eyes, which I recently (re)discovered.

Three tracks by Legowelt make it in: On The Seaside, Are You Truly Debonaire, and Gina Flies To Space. It makes me really happy that On The Seaside mixes into Sea Hunt so nicely.

The bit in the middle - Vuelo, The Invite, Not Phazed - is a weird little house aside. I'm not sure it works, but that's OK; it changes up the sound nicely. The Omar-S track in particular is really good.

There's a sloppy transition or two, and a few of the tracks could be swapped out for something more suitable, but then that's always true of my sets. I had a great time mixing these tunes again; can't ask for more than that.

  19. Kung Fu Jesus / Amen.. & Then Some 56:37
  20. B Phenix / Tomorrow Lost Yesterday 58:30

What I said about MTT021 holds true for this show as well - this is the kind of mix I used to make in high school, only better. I'm still playing and listening to most of the same tracks from that time period, as demonstrated here. (Crystal Method, FSOL, Überzone, etc.)

There's a lot of FSOL in this. Expander and Papua New Guinea, obviously, but also Chile Of The Bass Generation from the deceptive Earthbeat compilation. And Necros' Isotoxin, which I consider an honorary FSOL track, based on the sound of it. About once a year I try to mix Isotoxin into Expander and each time I re-discover it doesn't work.

Following up on MTT021 again, I did pick up a copy of The Trip (in this case the Remixes 12") for this mix. I don't think I presented it well here - I should have started it from a point further in the track. It's a massive tune regardless.

I'm happy with this. It's been a good week, going through these tracks again.
